While fully autonomous long-haul transport is still maturing, there is one area where the technology is already generating economic value today: enclosed depot and terminal yards. Yard operation — pulling a loaded trailer to the ramp, taking an emptied one to the parking area — is a low-speed, repetitive job on private property; it is an ideal starting point for autonomous systems.
Why the Yard First?
The uncertainties of the public road — pedestrians, traffic, weather, legal liability — are minimised in the yard. Routes are mapped, speed is low, and the yard management software already knows which trailer is going to which ramp. The autonomous yard tractor takes this instruction directly from the system, and keeps working after the human operator's shift has ended.
Requirements on the Trailer Side
- A standard-height king-pin and a clean coupling zone suited to automatic coupling
- Compatibility of air and electric lines with automatic coupling systems
- Marking or tag infrastructure so the vehicle's identity can be read remotely
- Electrically or automatically controlled landing legs
Every lesson learned from yard operation — coupling reliability, sensor maintenance, trailer data quality — also lays the foundation for autonomous systems headed for the public road. The depot yard is, in this sense, a laboratory; an operator who chooses trailers compatible with this laboratory starts ready for the next step too.
