Electronic Brake Systems and Autonomous Driving: The Infrastructure on the Trailer Side

The most critical ability of an autonomous vehicle is not accelerating but stopping. However smart the tractor is, most of the braking force comes from the trailer axles; this is why the fundamental infrastructure of autonomous driving on the trailer side is the electronic brake system (EBS).

From Pneumatic to Electronic

In classic pneumatic braking, the command is transmitted as air pressure travels along the line, and the delay is physical. In EBS, the brake demand reaches all modulators instantly via an electrical signal; air is used only to apply force. The shortened response time makes the autonomous system's braking-distance calculation reliable; load-sensing pressure distribution, meanwhile, preserves stability by sending force to each axle in proportion to the load it carries.
