The hub-to-hub model solves this challenge with an elegant division of labour: human drivers bring the load from the city to a transfer centre (hub) beside the motorway; the autonomous tractor takes on the long, monotonous motorway leg between two hubs; at the destination hub the load is handed back to a human driver.

Why Does the Model Make Sense?

The motorway is the most predictable environment for autonomous systems: no intersections, no pedestrians, high lane discipline. Automating the long leg raises vehicle utilisation because it is not subject to driver rest requirements; human drivers, meanwhile, work close to home on short, regular shifts.
