In a silo-tanker operation, the number of trips a vehicle makes per day is often determined not by the road but by the time spent at the discharge point. Every lengthened discharge means a waiting tractor, a waiting driver and a lost trip. The good news: discharge time is, to a large degree, a manageable variable.
Three Main Variables
- Pressure management: The balance between tank pressure and product-line flow varies from product to product; blindly raising pressure does not always speed up flow, and can even cause blockage
- Slope and position: Tilting the vehicle slightly rearward during discharge feeds product flow towards the conical outlet; on tipping-type silo tankers, correct use of the lift angle noticeably shortens the time
- Fluidisation: Aeration pads at the base of the tank loosen the powder product with air, making it flow; activating the pad sequence according to the manufacturer's procedure prevents bridging
Knowing the Product
Cement, flour, PVC powder and granular products all have completely different flow characters, and a damp product imposes its own rules on top. Experienced operators record pressure and pad combinations by product, so every discharge becomes a repeated recipe rather than an experiment.
The final link is equipment health: worn seals lose pressure, a punctured pad opens a channel instead of fluidising, and a narrowed hose slows the whole line. When discharge time is measured and logged regularly, a lengthening time can be read as a maintenance signal before it grows into a failure.
