For many years the communication between tractor and trailer was limited to a handful of lines: brake air, lighting and basic brake data. In the age of the smart trailer, the volume of information crossing this bridge is growing fast, because the trailer is now, on its own, a data source with its sensors, cameras and control units.
What Crosses the Bridge?
- Brake and stability data: EBS status, roll-stability interventions, pad wear
- Load information: Axle loads, estimated centre of gravity, load-shift warnings
- Tyre data: Pressure and temperature values, slow-leak detection
- Body status: Door, ramp and valve positions, refrigeration-unit parameters

Tomorrow's Need: Bandwidth and Trust
Video streaming and sensor data are straining the capacity of classic data lines; the industry is therefore moving towards higher-bandwidth, network-based architectures between tractor and trailer. In an autonomous scenario this bridge is not a comfort feature but a safety component: the system's behaviour must be predefined in case of a data interruption, and the connection must be established with authentication at every coupling. Seamless pairing of different-brand tractors and trailers, meanwhile, is only possible through standardisation. Asking about the currency of the data interface when choosing a trailer is now as natural as asking about brakes and axles.
