Material options in the trailer's load-bearing structure are limited by strength requirements; on interior surfaces, however, the designer's hand is far freer. Floor covering, wall panels, door linings and accessory parts are becoming the first zones where low-carbon material families enter trailers.
Which Materials Are Candidates?
- Certified wood and bamboo-based floors: Coverings of proven strength, sourced with a sustainable-forest-management certificate
- Natural-fibre-reinforced composites: Lightweight panels combining flax and hemp fibre with resin, suited to interior-panel and cover applications
- Recycled plastic panels: Impact-resistant, washable wall-protection surfaces that can be recycled again at end of life
- Bio-based resins: Plant-derived alternatives to petroleum-derived binders
The Engineering Filter
Interior surface material is also subject to a serious specification: floor hardness able to withstand forklift wheels, the pull load of a lashing-strap hook, moisture and chemical contact, and cleanability in loads requiring hygiene. New materials that do not pass this filter become mere brochure decoration; when they do pass, they bring the vehicle both lower embedded carbon and often a weight advantage. The right approach is a gradual one: field validation first on low-risk surfaces, then widening the scope. A sustainable material becomes genuinely sustainable once it proves its claim in the field.
