The carbon debate often focuses on the exhaust pipe; yet the trailer itself does not burn fuel. To see its carbon story requires life-cycle assessment (LCA): the systematic method that puts the emissions of every stage — from raw-material production through manufacturing, from service life to end of life — into the same account.
Stages of the Cycle
- Raw material: The carbon intensity of steel and aluminium production; recycled input markedly lowers this item
- Manufacturing: The energy consumption of cutting, welding, painting and assembly
- Use: The trailer's share of weight and aerodynamics reflected in the tractor's fuel consumption

The Heavy Side of the Scale: The Use Phase
Over a service life of hundreds of thousands of kilometres, the trailer's weight and aerodynamic drag are complicit in every litre the tractor burns; this is why the use phase is by far the largest item of the total footprint. This fact directly affects design decisions: taking on some extra emissions in manufacturing for the sake of lightweighting pays itself back many times over, and quickly, through the gain in the use phase. The same logic applies to durability: a vehicle with a longer life spreads its embedded carbon over more kilometres.
LCA is not a marketing label but a decision tool: from material choice to aerodynamic package, it shows the true cost and gain of every choice on the same scale. For fleets with carbon targets, trailer selection now begins with reading this scale.
