Brake Pad and Disc Life: Common Mistakes That Accelerate Wear

A brake pad and disc are consumable items; yet the life of the same part can differ many times over between two trailers. The difference usually arises not from road conditions but from maintenance and usage habits.

The Most Common Mistakes

  • Dragging brake: A seized calliper pin or a faulty retraction mechanism keeps the pad in constant contact with the disc; wear accelerates, the disc overheats and cracks
  • Mismatched pad selection: Unapproved friction material, or material not suited to the vehicle, disrupts both disc life and brake balance
  • Tractor-trailer brake mismatch: In combinations with an unbalanced brake-force ratio, the load falls onto one side; either the tractor's or the trailer's brakes wear out early
  • Dirty or seized mechanism: Site dust and road salt lock up adjustment mechanisms, creating uneven wear
  • Replacing only the pad: Fitting a new pad onto a worn disc extends the bedding-in period and rapidly wears out the new pad too

The Discipline That Extends Life

Periodic checks should look not only at pad thickness but at the disc's surface condition, the calliper's free movement, and the symmetry of wear on both sides of the axle. Asymmetric wear is the most legible sign of a mechanical problem that has not yet turned into a failure. Doing calliper maintenance together with a pad change prevents the old problem being passed on to the new part; a small difference in labour markedly extends the interval to the next change.
