Predictive Maintenance: The Trailer That Warns Before It Fails

The classic approach to maintenance looks at the calendar: lubricate at a certain mileage, replace at a certain month. Predictive maintenance looks at the vehicle itself instead. Sensors on the trailer continuously collect data such as bearing temperature, tyre pressure, brake-pad thickness and suspension behaviour, and flag deviation from normal before a failure grows.

What Data Is Monitored?

  • Hub and bearing temperature: Overheating is the earliest herald of bearing damage
  • Tyre pressure and temperature (TPMS): Slow leaks are caught before they turn into a blowout
  • Brake wear sensors: Estimated pad life makes the service appointment plannable
  • EBS event logs: ABS interventions and load-distribution data feed trend analysis
  • Mileage and usage profile: Maintenance intervals flex according to actual operating conditions

What Does It Bring the Fleet?

The biggest gain is turning unplanned downtime into planned service. A trailer stranded on the road holds up the tractor, the driver and the entire load, generating recovery and delay costs. When the same failure is read from data weeks earlier, the repair is scheduled into a window when the vehicle is already idle anyway. The second gain is on the parts side: a part in good condition is not replaced just because the calendar says so, while a part that has genuinely reached the end of its life is renewed before it hits the limit.

Moving to predictive maintenance does not require a large investment; a telematics infrastructure that reads TPMS and EBS data is already present in most modern trailers. The real difference comes from a maintenance culture that monitors this data regularly and turns it into action.
