The Cost Equation
CFRP raw material and production costs are many times those of structural steel. This gap closes only in scenarios where every kilogram saved generates high revenue: tanker operations running at the weight limit, routes where low tare weight writes directly to trip revenue, or fleets where total cost of ownership is calculated over the long term.
Sensible Use: The Hybrid Approach
- High-strength steel remains in the main chassis beams
- CFRP is used as local reinforcement in critical zones with high bending stress
- A glass fibre-carbon mix strikes an economic balance in body panels and hatches
- In series production, pultrusion and non-prepreg methods reduce cost
The short answer: an all-carbon trailer is not economical today; but hybrid designs, in which carbon is used surgically at the points where it pays off most, answer both the performance and the cost question at the same time.
