Trailer End of Life: Not Scrap, But a Resource

The classic fate of a trailer pulled from the field is well known: a wait in a corner, then a scrap dealer in exchange for a weighbridge slip. Yet viewed systematically, the same vehicle is a component inventory made up of tonnes of steel and aluminium alongside axles, brake components, suspension elements and rims. Academic studies examining the dismantling and recovery of heavy vehicles show that planned evaluation of this inventory produces markedly higher value than wholesale scrapping.

A Planned End-of-Life Process

  • Assessment: Component-level condition survey of the vehicle and extraction of second-life potential
  • Dismantling: Undamaged separation and classification of reusable parts
  • Decontamination: Compliant disposal of oils, brake fluids and hazardous materials
  • Material sorting: Directing steel, aluminium, rubber and plastic into separate streams

Where Is the Value Hidden?

A usable axle or brake component returns to the spare-parts market at a price many times the material value. Sorted clean metal fetches a higher price than mixed scrap. In special bodies such as tankers, a decontamination certificate is the precondition for every subsequent step, and when properly done, the body aluminium is one of the most valuable recovery items. End of life is not the vehicle's last cost but its last revenue — as long as it is planned.
