What Is a Kingpin?
The kingpin is a forged steel pin mounted under the front section of a semi-trailer, forming the single mechanical connection point between tractor and trailer. It sits in the fifth wheel plate on the tractor chassis and is gripped by the fifth wheel's jaw lock. All of the combination's pulling force, braking forces and lateral cornering loads pass through this one component, which is why the kingpin is considered one of the most safety-critical parts of a trailer.
The pin is bolted or welded to a reinforced plate (the kingpin plate, or rubbing plate assembly) at the front of the semi-trailer. It is made of high-strength, hardened forged steel, and its geometry and dimensions are defined by international standards (ISO 337 and equivalents).
Relationship with the Fifth Wheel
The fifth wheel is a horizontal coupling plate with a V-shaped entry throat, mounted on the tractor chassis. The coupling works like this:
- As the tractor reverses, the kingpin enters through the V-throat of the plate.
- The locking jaw inside the plate grips the neck of the pin and the spring-loaded mechanism locks.
- The lock is backed up by a secondary safety latch; the driver confirms the coupling with a physical tug test and a visual check.
While the fifth wheel plate carries the vertical front-end load of the semi-trailer, the kingpin transmits the horizontal forces. In turns, the trailer pivots freely around the pin axis; this axis is the geometric centre of the combination's manoeuvring behaviour.
The 2-Inch and 3.5-Inch Standards
Two kingpin sizes are common worldwide:
- 2 inch (50.8 mm): The size used in the vast majority of standard road transport — dry freight, curtainsiders, reefers and light-to-medium tanker applications.
- 3.5 inch (90 mm class): Designed for heavy-duty applications, used on lowbed (low-loader) carriers, heavy haulage combinations and any coupling requiring very high drawbar forces.
The size refers to the diameter of the pin neck and must match the fifth wheel lock exactly: a 2-inch pin cannot be coupled to a 3.5-inch plate (without an approved adapter) and vice versa. Pin height, plate thickness and bolt pattern are also defined in the relevant standards; replacements must always use the same type of approved part.
Maintenance and Wear Symptoms
A kingpin works under constant friction and impact; without regular inspection, lock play grows and coupling security degrades. Key points:
- Dimensional checks: The pin neck and head are measured periodically with a dedicated kingpin gauge. When the manufacturer's wear limit is exceeded, the pin is replaced; repairs such as weld build-up or re-machining of a kingpin are not acceptable.
- Visual signs: Oval wear on the neck, surface notches, cracks or corrosion, and loosened plate bolts are warning signs; suspected cracks call for non-destructive testing.
- Symptoms while driving: A clunk on pull-away and braking, fore-aft slack felt in the combination, or abnormal movement at the plate all point to pin or lock wear.
- Lubrication: The fifth wheel plate and pin contact surfaces are greased at the intervals specified by the manufacturer; a dry plate wears both pin and lock rapidly.
- Plate inspection: The flatness of the kingpin plate and its attachment to the chassis must also be checked; a deformed plate pulls the pin off its axis.
