Heavy Haulage with Lowbed Trailers: An Overview

What Is a Lowbed?

A lowbed (low-loader, in French usage "surbaissée") is a heavy-haulage trailer whose loading platform sits markedly lower than on standard trailers. The deck runs close to the ground between the gooseneck at the front and the axle group at the rear. The design pursues two goals at once: letting tall cargo pass under bridges and overpasses, and keeping the centre of gravity of heavy masses low to improve stability on the road.

Why It Is Used for Machinery and Heavy Cargo

Excavators, dozers, rollers, cranes, transformers, generators and industrial plant components are both heavy and, in most cases, too tall for a standard body. The lowbed answers both problems together.

  • The low deck reduces total vehicle height, creating clearance headroom for tall loads.
  • Tracked machines can climb onto the deck under their own power via rear-mounted mechanical or hydraulic ramps — no external crane needed.
  • Multi-axle configurations spread the load over more contact points, so the load per axle can be kept within road and bridge limits.
  • On heavy models, hydraulic suspension and self-steering or forced-steering axles help long combinations negotiate tight junctions.

Extendable and Well-Deck Types

The lowbed family is not a single mould; sub-types differ according to the geometry of the cargo.

  • Extendable (telescopic) lowbed: the chassis lengthens through nested profiles. Used for cargo that will not fit a standard deck — wind turbine components, steel structures, long machine bodies.
  • Well-deck (deepwell) lowbed: the middle section of the platform drops further between the axles, forming a "well". The tallest loads sit in this well, bringing overall height to a minimum.
  • Detachable-gooseneck models: the gooseneck is removed and the front of the deck lowered to the ground, so tracked machines can drive on from the front without ramps.
  • Axle count and layout (fixed, rear-steered, modular add-on lines) determine capacity; exact figures depend on the model and national regulations.

The Concept of the Oversize Load

Road legislation defines maximum width, height, length and weight for vehicles; together these limits form the legal loading gauge. In heavy haulage the cargo very often exceeds at least one of them, making the movement an "oversize" or "overweight" transport.

  • Oversize movements require special permits, which may be restricted to specific routes, dates and hours.
  • Above certain thresholds, pilot or escort vehicles — and in some countries police escort — may be mandatory.
  • Route planning is critical: bridge load ratings, underpass heights and turning radii are surveyed in advance.
  • Threshold values and permit procedures differ from country to country, sometimes region to region; on international moves, the rules of every transit country must be satisfied separately.

Within this regulatory framework, the lowbed is the principal tool for bringing heavy and tall cargo as close to the legal limits as possible.
