Fault Diagnosis Using Electronic Brake System Data

The electronic brake system (EBS) manages brake force electronically while also acting like a black box: it holds fault codes, ABS interventions, load-sensor data and system events in its memory. Correctly read, these records take fault diagnosis out of the realm of guesswork.

What Can Be Read from EBS Data?

  • Active and historic fault codes: Which circuit the fault is in, since when, and at what frequency
  • Wheel-speed signals: The irregular signal pattern produced by a contaminated or loose-play ABS sensor
  • Load-sensor values: Axle load read from suspension pressure; the basis of brake-force distribution
  • Mileage and usage counters: Real usage data for maintenance planning

Typical Diagnostic Scenarios

If a driver's complaint of "the brake light comes on now and then" matches dropouts in a specific wheel's speed signal in the records, the address is clear: a sensor gap or a cable-path issue. If the load-sensor value does not match the real load, the brake balance is off — this can also explain asymmetric pad wear. Frequently repeated ABS-intervention records, meanwhile, may point not to the brakes but to a suspension or load-distribution problem.

An important habit: clearing the code and sending the vehicle back on the road is not diagnosis. If a code is cleared without fixing the cause, the same fault comes back along with the data — except this time a road-safety risk may have passed in between. When EBS data is read regularly, the brake system writes its own maintenance calendar.
