What Is a Tridem Axle?
A tridem is an axle group made up of three closely spaced axles on a trailer. The vast majority of European-style standard semi-trailers carry a tridem axle group at the rear. Having three axles work together spreads the total load over a larger contact area: the load per wheel drops, the point pressure on the road surface decreases, and braking force is distributed across more wheels.
Axle groups are named after the number of axles: single, tandem (two) and tridem (three). For a group to count as a "group", the spacing between the axles must fall within the limits defined in the regulations; if the axles are far enough apart, each is assessed as a separate axle.
Typical Legal Limits in the EU and Türkiye
In the European Union, the weight and dimension framework for international transport is set by Directive 96/53/EC; Turkish regulations are largely aligned with this framework. Commonly referenced values are:
- Non-driven single axle: up to 10 tonnes
- Driven axle: up to 11.5 tonnes
- Tridem axle group (on a semi-trailer): up to 24 tonnes, depending on axle spacing and suspension type
- 5- or 6-axle tractor and semi-trailer combination: 40 tonnes total (some countries allow up to 44 tonnes for combined/intermodal operations)
These figures are the general framework; exact limits vary with axle spacing, suspension type (air suspension is favoured in most regulations) and country. For purely national transport some countries permit higher gross weights, so the current rules of every country on the route must be checked separately.
An important distinction: the maximum weight a vehicle can carry technically (the value on the manufacturer's plate) and the weight legally permitted are different concepts. The legal limit is always binding and may not be exceeded even when the technical capacity is higher.
Why Axle Load Distribution Matters
Keeping the total weight under the limit is not enough on its own; the load must also be correctly distributed across the axles. Consequences of poor distribution:
- Axle overload fines: Even if the combination totals less than 40 tonnes, a load piled towards the front or rear can push a single axle or axle group over its own limit; at roadside checks this is a separate violation.
- Braking and steering safety: A tractor with a lightly loaded front axle loses steering authority; a trailer with an overloaded rear group suffers braking imbalance and tyre overheating.
- Rollover risk: A raised or laterally shifted centre of gravity increases rollover risk, especially in curves and lane changes.
- Road and vehicle life: Excessive axle load damages the road surface disproportionately and wears out suspension, tyres and chassis components prematurely.
In practice, correct distribution is achieved by placing the load evenly on the trailer deck, positioning heavy items close to the axle group, and keeping the load imposed on the kingpin (fifth wheel) within the range the tractor allows. On air-suspended vehicles, axle load indicators and on-board weighing systems give the driver real-time control. On tridem groups fitted with a lift axle, raising one axle when empty or lightly loaded reduces tyre wear and fuel consumption; under load the axle lowers automatically.
