The European Union is progressively tightening heavy-duty CO₂ emission standards to cut emissions from road transport. This framework, long relevant only to tractor and truck manufacturers, is now expanding to cover trailers as well: the contribution of trailers and semi-trailers to fuel consumption is being measured, classified and documented.
Why Did the Trailer Enter the Equation?
Most of the aerodynamic drag of a tractor-trailer combination originates from the trailer body; unladen weight and tyre rolling resistance also directly affect consumption. Regulators, moving from this reality, have accepted that emission targets cannot be reached through engine-side improvements alone: an efficient trailer means an efficient vehicle.
Concrete Consequences for the Manufacturer
- Aerodynamic equipment, lightweighting and low-rolling-resistance tyres are becoming standard design inputs
- Documenting products' efficiency performance through standard simulation is being added to production processes

This transformation is not a burden for the trailer manufacturer but an area for differentiation. Aerodynamic packages, lightweight material engineering and efficiency-focused design are turning, together with regulation, into a measurable sales argument; the well-prepared manufacturer will stand apart from competitors as standards tighten.
