On the carbon and chemical-emissions map of trailer manufacturing, the paint shop holds a special place: classic solvent-based paints release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere during curing. Tightening environmental legislation and corporate sustainability targets are steering the sector towards two proven alternatives: water-based paint systems and powder coating.
Water-Based Systems
In water-based paints, most of the solvent is water rather than organic solvent; VOC emissions drop markedly. Modern water-based topcoats are now competitive with their solvent-based counterparts in terms of coverage and durability. The transition requires investment: the application booth needs humidity and temperature control, the curing profile differs, and gun equipment must be corrosion-resistant — but these are known, solved engineering matters.
The Advantages of Powder Coating
- Contains no solvent; VOC emissions are practically zero
- Excess powder collected in the booth is reused; scrap is minimised
- The baked surface gains high resistance to impact and stone chipping
- Applied in series on component-based production such as axles, rims and chassis parts
In practice the two technologies complement each other: powder coating for components that fit in oven dimensions, a water-based topcoat over a zinc-based primer for large body and chassis surfaces. The result is not only environmental: worker health improves, legal-compliance risk falls, and a concrete emissions reduction emerges that can be written into the customer's supply-chain report.
