Cameras and Radars: The Rise of Perception Systems on the Trailer

The most dangerous blind spots of a tractor-trailer combination are not around the cab but around the trailer: the lane running along the vehicle's right side, the rear manoeuvring zone, and the area left uncovered on the inside during turns. Placing sensors only on the cab means leaving the longest body without sight.

Which Sensor, Where on the Trailer?

Radars and cameras placed on the side surface feed lane-change and turn assistants; they especially cover the zone the cab sensor cannot see for cyclist and pedestrian detection. Rear cameras and ultrasonic sensors make ramp approach and reverse manoeuvring safe. In-body cameras, meanwhile, produce operational data such as load-shift and fill-level tracking.

Engineering Realities

  • The trailer environment is harsh: an enclosure resistant to vibration, mud, salt and wash water is essential
  • Contamination detection and heating on lens and radar surfaces is a precondition for winter operation
  • Sensor calibration must be renewed after body repair or repainting
  • The system must be able to pair with different-brand vehicles every time the tractor changes

Equipment fitted today for driver assistance is tomorrow's data source for autonomous systems. A trailer with perception is no longer a passive body but the seeing and reporting half of the combination; for fleet managers it is also a concrete investment that lowers accident costs.
