Safety in chemical tanker operations is built on two axes. The first is material compatibility: the product carried must be chemically at peace with the tank wall, gaskets, valves and pump. The second is product-to-product compatibility: the new load must not enter a hazardous reaction with residue from the previous load, and must not be contaminated in terms of quality.
Material Compatibility: It Starts With the List
Every tanker has a product list defining which substances it may carry, and that list is not a suggestion but a limit. Stainless steel carries a wide range of chemicals, while some aggressive products require a rubber- or polymer-lined tank; the weak link most often forgotten is gaskets and hoses. Even if the shell holds up, the wrong gasket material swells, hardens and starts leaking within days.
Discipline Against Cross-Contamination
- Load-history record: the tank's most recent products carried are documented; certain product pairs require a mandatory intermediate load or special washing in between
- Approved washing: cleaning at product changeover is carried out at an authorised station with a procedure suited to the product; the wash certificate is the trip's document
- Dead-volume hunting: residue left in the pump body, valve gaps and pipe bottoms is the most common source of contamination
- Single-product dedication: for the riskiest chemicals, the safest solution is dedicating the tank to a single product
On the manufacturer's side, the fight against cross-contamination begins in the design: slope that ensures full drainage, dead-volume-free valve placement and a cleanable interior surface quality. A tank that is easy to clean is both a safer tank and one that runs more trips.
