Electric Axle (e-Axle) Technology: Recovering Energy from Trailers

As a heavy vehicle slows down, an enormous amount of kinetic energy turns into heat in the brake pads and dissipates into the air. The starting point of electric axle (e-axle) technology is precisely this waste: the motor switches into generator mode, converts the deceleration energy into electricity, and stores it in the battery mounted on the trailer.

Where the Recovery Comes From

The most efficient harvesting moments are long descents and repeated stop-and-go traffic. Maintaining a steady speed downhill already requires braking; the e-axle converts this resistance into electricity generation and also reduces the heating of the service brakes. In urban distribution, every stop writes small but continuous contributions to the battery.

Where Does the Harvested Energy Go?

  • It is returned as drive support during pull-away and grade climbing
  • It is used to power the reefer cooling unit electrically
  • It feeds auxiliary systems such as the lift axle, the tail-lift and lighting
  • When paired with an electric tractor, it contributes to total range

On the engineering side, the critical issue is integration: the e-axle must communicate flawlessly with the braking system and the vehicle control unit; recovery torque must never compromise road grip or stability. In a correctly tuned system the driver feels no difference at all; only the fuel bill and the brake-maintenance line items show the difference. Energy recovery is a quiet revenue item written directly into the trailer's total cost of ownership.
